Life for Something like it

People say 'Life must go on'
One sang "The show must go on.."
He lived it until lights out
While we breathlessly watched his swan song.

As one day birthed another
Our lives stop for something like it.

Who gets to haul the dirt left behind?
When does the pit get filled?
Why does blue feel like tar
As time moves with impatient thrill?

Ahead is an unwanted prospect
Life waits with eager hands
When we look at what we have in us
We join time's gypsy band.

As one day rolls into another
We stagger with shunted thoughts.

The voice and hands of a few
Fumbling along with us, yet never giving away
Remind us of purpose and reason
And of strength that is here to stay.

Unrushed saunter now we, with baby steps
These voices remind us with the one who has left
Though the smog of this legacy is now remiss
Love will propell life in all fairness.

As one day sleeps into another
Our lives learn to take first breath again.
